This volume examines Ibero-American as well as Slavic literatures of the 21st century and studies how historical imaginaries in family narratives are functionalized for both individual and collective and (post-)national identities. The analysis proceeds along three conceptual axes. What these narratives have in common is that they construct specific constellations of the historical imagination and of family, whereby ‘family’ is here conceived not so much as an organic micro-unity, but rather as changing, multiple relations between individual members, godparents, first- and second-degree relatives, non-blood-related family members, present and absent members, adopted children, etc. Furthermore, these novels are often grounded in trans-generational memories. Given that strong asymmetrical dependencies have shaped human societies throughout history, this kind of social relation has also left its traces in many types of texts. Using written and oral narratives in attempts to reconstruct the history of asymmetrical dependency comes along with various methodological challenges, as the 15 articles in this interdisciplinary volume illustrate. They focus on a wide range of different (factual and fictional) text types, including inscriptions from Egyptian tombs, biblical stories, novels from antiquity, the Middle High German Rolandslied, Ottoman court records, captivity narratives, travelogues, the American gift book The Liberty Bell, and oral narratives by Caribbean Hindu women. Most of the texts discussed in this volume have so far received comparatively little attention in slavery and dependency studies. Unter dem Einfluss der französischen Oper tritt eine Oper-Film-Beziehung im rioplatensen Raum zu Beginn des 20. Jh. in Erscheinung. So ist es in Buenos Aires bei filmischen Adaptationen der französischen Opern Faust (1859) und Carmen (1875) zu einer besonderen Medienverschmelzung in der Stumm- und Tonfilmzeit gekommen. Durch die Analyse der inter-, transkulturellen sowie intermedialen Dimensionen, wurde eine (alp)traumhafte bzw. imaginäre Oper im argentinischen Film sichtbar. Dies konnte mit den Thesen der Philosophen M. N. Lapoujade und C. Castoriadis hervorgehoben werden, da sie die Fähigkeit des Menschen zu imaginieren fokussieren. So rückt das "radikal Imaginäre", der "Homo Imaginans" und das "gesellschaftliche Imaginäre" für das bessere Verständnis in den Vordergrund der Arbeit. In Anbetracht des argentinischen Gedichts Fausto (1866), des argentinischen Films La Carmen criolla (1918), der "Traducción" von J. L. Borges sowie den Filmarbeiten von L. C. Amadori und L. Saslavsky konnte ein lateinamerikanisches Genre mit dem Neologismus "Imagópera" festgelegt werden, das sich vom europäischen wie US-amerikanischen abgrenzt.
