Contemporary Geometry

Contemporary Geometry

Autor: Hung-hsi Wu

Número de Páginas: 483

Early one morning in April of 1987, the Chinese mathematician J. -Q. Zhong died unexpectedly of a heart attack in New York. He was then near the end of a one-year visit in the United States. When news of his death reached his Chinese-American friends, it was immediately decided by one and all that something should be done to preserve his memory. The present volume is an outgrowth of this sentiment. His friends in China have also established a Zhong Jia-Qing Memorial Fund, which has since twice awarded the Zhong Jia-Qing prizes for Chinese mathematics graduate students. It is hoped that at least part of the reasons for the esteem and affection in which he was held by all who knew him would come through in the succeeding pages of this volume. The three survey chapters by Li and Treibergs, Lu, and Siu (Chapters 1-3) all center around the areas of mathematics in which Zhong made noteworthy contributions. In addition to putting Zhong's mathematical contributions in perspective, these articles should be useful also to a large segment of the mathematical community; together they give a coherent picture of a sizable portion of contemporary geometry. The survey of Lu differs from the other ...

A Companion to Econometric Analysis of Panel Data

A Companion to Econometric Analysis of Panel Data

Autor: Badi H. Baltagi

Número de Páginas: 322

This book is a companion to Baltagi’s (2008) leading graduate econometrics textbook on panel data entitled Econometric Analysis of Panel Data, 4th Edition. The book guides the student of panel data econometrics by solving exercises in a logical and pedagogical manner, helping the reader understand, learn and apply panel data methods. It is also a helpful tool for those who like to learn by solving exercises and running software to replicate empirical studies. It works as a complementary study guide to Baltagi (2008) and also as a stand alone book that builds up the reader’s confidence in working out difficult exercises in panel data econometrics and applying these methods to empirical work. The exercises start by providing some background information on partitioned regressions and the Frisch-Waugh-Lovell theorem. Then it goes through the basic material on fixed and random effects models in a one-way and two-way error components models: basic estimation, test of hypotheses and prediction. This include maximum likelihood estimation, testing for poolability of the data, testing for the significance of individual and time effects, as well as Hausman's test for correlated effects....

Valuations, Orderings, and Milnor $K$-Theory

Valuations, Orderings, and Milnor $K$-Theory

Autor: Ido Efrat

Número de Páginas: 305

This monograph is a comprehensive exposition of the modern theory of valued and ordered fields. It presents the classical aspects of such fields: their arithmetic, topology, and Galois theory. Deeper cohomological aspects are studied in its last part in an elementary manner. This is done by means of the newly developed theory of generalized Milnor $K$-rings. The book emphasizes the close connections and interplay between valuations and orderings, and to a large extent, studies themin a unified manner. The presentation is almost entirely self-contained. In particular, the text develops the needed machinery of ordered abelian groups. This is then used throughout the text to replace the more classical techniques of commutative algebra. Likewise, the book provides an introductionto the Milnor $K$-theory. The reader is introduced to the valuation-theoretic techniques as used in modern Galois theory, especially in applications to birational anabelian geometry, where one needs to detect valuations from their ``cohomological footprints''. These powerful techniques are presented here for the first time in a unified and elementary way.

Fundamentals of Nonlinear Optics

Fundamentals of Nonlinear Optics

Autor: Peter E. Powers

Número de Páginas: 332

Fundamentals of Nonlinear Optics encompasses a broad spectrum of nonlinear phenomena from second-harmonic generation to soliton formation. The wide use of nonlinear optical phenomena in laboratories and commercial devices requires familiarity with the underlying physics as well as practical device considerations. This text adopts a combined approach to analyze the complimentary aspects of nonlinear optics, enabling a fundamental understanding of both a given effect and practical device applications. After a review chapter on linear phenomena important to nonlinear optics, the book tackles nonlinear phenomena with a look at the technologically important processes of second-harmonic generation, sum-frequency and difference-frequency generation, and the electro-optic effect. The author covers these processes in considerable detail at both theoretical and practical levels as the formalisms developed for these effects carry to subsequent topics, such as four-wave mixing, self-phase modulation, Raman scattering, Brillouin scattering, and soliton formation. Consistently connecting theory, process, effects, and applications, this introductory text encourages students to master key...

Analysis and Decision Making in Uncertain Systems

Analysis and Decision Making in Uncertain Systems

Autor: Zdzislaw Bubnicki

Número de Páginas: 377

Problems, methods and algorithms of decision making based on an uncertain knowledge now create a large and intensively developing area in the field of knowledge-based decision support systems. The main aim of this book is to present a unified, systematic description of analysis and decision problems in a wide class of uncertain systems described by traditional mathematical models and by relational knowledge representations. A part of the book is devoted to new original ideas introduced and developed by the author: the concept of uncertain variables and the idea of a learning process consisting in knowledge validation and updating. In a certain sense this work may be considered as an extension of the author's monograph Uncertain Logics, Variables and Systems (Springer-Verlag, 2002). In this book it has been shown how the different descriptions of uncertainty based on random, uncertain and fuzzy variables may be treated uniformly and applied as tools for general analysis and decision problems, and for specific uncertain systems and problems (dynamical control systems, operation systems, knowledge-based pattern recognition under uncertainty, task allocation in a set of...

Advanced Quantum Theory and Its Applications Through Feynman Diagrams

Advanced Quantum Theory and Its Applications Through Feynman Diagrams

Autor: Michael D. Scadron

Número de Páginas: 390

The fundamental goal of physics is an understanding of the forces of nature in their simplest and most general terms. Yet the scientific method inadver tently steers us away from that course by requiring an ever finer subdivision of the problem into constituent components, so that the overall objective is often obscured, even to the experts. The situation is most frustrating and acute for today's graduate students, who must try to absorb as much general knowledge as is possible and also try to digest only a sm all fraction of the ever increasing morass of observational data or detailed theories to write a dissertation. This book is based on the premise that to study a subject in depth is only half the battle; the remaining struggle is to put the pieces together in a broad but comprehensive manner. Accordingly, the primary purpose of this text is to cut across the barriers existing between the various fields ofmodern physics (elementary particles; nuclear, atomic, and solid state physics; gravitation) and present a unified description of the quantum nature of forces encountered in each field at the level of the second-year physics graduate student. This unification is based on...

Game Theory Basics

Game Theory Basics

Autor: Bernhard Von Stengel

Número de Páginas: 376

Game theory is the science of interaction. This textbook, derived from courses taught by the author and developed over several years, is a comprehensive, straightforward introduction to the mathematics of non-cooperative games. It teaches what every game theorist should know: the important ideas and results on strategies, game trees, utility theory, imperfect information, and Nash equilibrium. The proofs of these results, in particular existence of an equilibrium via fixed points, and an elegant direct proof of the minimax theorem for zero-sum games, are presented in a self-contained, accessible way. This is complemented by chapters on combinatorial games like Go; and, it has introductions to algorithmic game theory, traffic games, and the geometry of two-player games. This detailed and lively text requires minimal mathematical background and includes many examples, exercises, and pictures. It is suitable for self-study or introductory courses in mathematics, computer science, or economics departments.

Sequential Analysis

Sequential Analysis

Autor: Alexander Tartakovsky , Igor Nikiforov , Michele Basseville

Número de Páginas: 605

Sequential Analysis: Hypothesis Testing and Changepoint Detection systematically develops the theory of sequential hypothesis testing and quickest changepoint detection. It also describes important applications in which theoretical results can be used efficiently. The book reviews recent accomplishments in hypothesis testing and changepoint detection both in decision-theoretic (Bayesian) and non-decision-theoretic (non-Bayesian) contexts. The authors not only emphasize traditional binary hypotheses but also substantially more difficult multiple decision problems. They address scenarios with simple hypotheses and more realistic cases of two and finitely many composite hypotheses. The book primarily focuses on practical discrete-time models, with certain continuous-time models also examined when general results can be obtained very similarly in both cases. It treats both conventional i.i.d. and general non-i.i.d. stochastic models in detail, including Markov, hidden Markov, state-space, regression, and autoregression models. Rigorous proofs are given for the most important results. Written by leading authorities in the field, this book covers the theoretical developments and...

Some of the most challenging problems in science and engineering are being addressed by the integration of computation and science, a research ?eld known as computational science. Computational science plays a vital role in fundamental advances in biology, physics, chemistry, astronomy, and a host of other disciplines. This is through the coordination of computation, data management, access to instrumentation, knowledge synthesis, and the use of new devices. It has an impact on researchers and practitioners in the sciences and beyond. The sheer size of many challenges in computational science dictates the use of supercomputing, parallel and distri- ted processing, grid-based processing, advanced visualization and sophisticated algorithms. At the dawn of the 21st century the series of International Conferences on Computational Science (ICCS) was initiated with a ?rst meeting in May 2001 in San Francisco. The success of that meeting motivated the organization of the - cond meeting held in Amsterdam April 21–24, 2002, where over 500 participants pushed the research ?eld further. The International Conference on Computational Science 2003 (ICCS 2003) is the follow-up to these earlier ...
